While it beneficial to be able to both copy UDFs and subtract the volume from master sample for the derivatives created, the derived vials should not be allowed to be created with 0.0 volume.
Problem: During the paste-as-derived process, if you forget to provide the volume for derived vials, the system defaults to 0.0. Updating the volume of some or all of the direct derivatives did not retroactively update the volume of a parent sample in this case.
In case where the derived volume was added correctly during the process, the full or partial use of it is properly reflected on a parent sample. It appears that once derived samples are created with 0.00 volume, something breaks and the linkage/calculation is no longer actively maintained.
Impact: The negative outcome - I can forget that I've already derived vials as parent volume is still showing as large and derive them again. Now I have duplication of samples and positions are taken up in FP, but not in actual freezer. This can also lead to the overestimation of the total available sample volume.
Suggestion for improvement:
Option 1: Update the parent samples volume as derived samples' volume are updated.
Option 2: Do not allow derived or direct samples to be created with 0.0 volume and show the warning.
Option 3: Both.
